Applying for a Vacancy
When applying for a vacancy there are a few points that you should always remember:
- Respond via the medium that the vacancy asks you to respond in whether that be telephone, CV, in person at an open day.
- Prepared yourself before responding:
- Responding by phone: Always read the advert fully before hand so that you know what the vacancy you are applying for is about and who you should be asking for. Have your full work history including dates with you and also a pen and paper incase you have to make notes. Also ensure you have your telephone number to hand as most employers will ask for this during your first contact.
- Responding by CV: Always ensure that your CV is clearly written, concise and to the point while fully outlining your previous experience. It should include at minimum your name, address, telephone numbers (home & mobile), email address, work history (including the month & year you started and finished at each employer) and full outline of the duties and responsibilities in each job. It should also ideally have the name, address and telephone number of at least two previous employers who have agreed to give you a reference.
- Responding in Person: Always ensure that you know exactly where you are going too, who you are asking for and what time you need to be there. Always take with you a CV of you work history, a pen and notepad and your telephone number. It may also help in many cases to take along ID to prove your eligibility to work in the UK, such as a passport, a visa (if necessary from the country of your passport), your birth certificate. As first impression count always go along smartly dressed.

Any later and you may be rushing and worst case scenario being late, any earlier and you may be left ages in a reception area with can lead you feeling uncomfortable and add to nerves of an interview.
- Always be smartly dressed, from your shirt collar down to your shoes.
- Always come prepared with EVERYTHING that the interviewer has asked for which could include work history, reference details, national insurance details, bank details, photo’s, passport, birth certificate and even proof of residency such as a recent utility bill.
- Always take time before your interview to think about the duties you carried out at previous employers AND how they may be relevant to the position you are applying for.
- Always have 3 or 4 questions that you would like to ask the interviewer with regards the vacancy, it will allow you to find out all about the job and also show the interviewer your interest in the position.
